Washington, D.C. May 7, 2026 - The Nigerian Center welcomes the appointment of His Excellency Lateef Kayode Are as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, marking a significant milestone in strengthening U.S.–Nigeria relations.
“This appointment carries historic significance on two levels: it marks Nigeria’s return to full ambassadorial engagement in Washington after a prolonged absence that left one of the world’s most consequential bilateral relationships without the senior diplomatic leadership it requires, and it brings to this role a distinguished leader whose career in military intelligence and national security offers a uniquely authoritative perspective on the complex dynamics shaping U.S.–Nigeria relations.
We are at a pivotal moment. Issues of security cooperation, investment, diaspora engagement, and Africa’s place in a rapidly evolving global order are central to this relationship. His Excellency’s appointment signals that Nigeria is prepared to engage these priorities with seriousness and strength. We welcome him and stand ready to support his mission,” said Dr. Malcolm Fabiyi, Board Chair of the Nigerian Center.
In a previous op-ed, Gbenga Ogunjimi, Executive Director of the Nigerian Center, outlined “Strengthening Nigeria’s Position – Five Expectations for the Incoming Ambassador to Washington,”emphasizing the importance of strategic engagement, diaspora inclusion, and economic diplomacy in advancing U.S.–Nigeria relations.
The Nigerian Center looks forward to working with Ambassador Are and his team to support initiatives that promote mutual prosperity, strengthen diplomatic ties, and expand opportunities for collaboration between both nations.
