Our immigration clinic now offers free walk-in services at the Nigerian Center, located at 700 Pennsylvania Ave, SE, Washington DC 20003. These clinic services are available every Thursday from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. For individuals residing outside the Washington DC metro area or those who prefer a virtual consultation, or if you have inquiries, please do not hesitate to call us at (800) 395-9272 to schedule an appointment or obtain further information. Please note that there is a small $85 fee to book a virtual consultation, while walk-in services remain free. 2026 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program

The Nigerian Center is thrilled to announce its new collaboration with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). Sponsored by the IRS, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers a secure and convenient method for thousands of families and individuals nationwide to complete their tax filings annually. Those eligible, with an annual income of less than $69,000, can now take advantage of this complimentary service at the Nigerian Center. The center will provide free tax preparation services through both walk-in and virtual options on Wednesdays and Thursdays (12:30PM - 4:30PM ET) from January 28 to April 15.

An info session is scheduled for February 6 at 12:30 PM ET, welcoming members of the public.

Nigeria is an important U.S. partner in Africa on security, trade, and democratic stability. As discussions continue around Nigeria’s status in U.S. religious freedom policy, including considerations related to Countries of Particular Concern (CPC), Congress has an opportunity to engage in a balanced dialogue on security cooperation, human rights, and regional stability.

This congressional briefing will provide Members of Congress and staff with a concise overview of Nigeria’s strategic importance to U.S. policy, the implications of CPC-related discussions, and the growing role of the Nigerian American diaspora as a bridge between both nations. Hosted by the Nigerian Center in partnership with a national coalition of Nigerian American organizations, the session will offer a nonpartisan forum to strengthen U.S.–Nigeria engagement across shared security, economic, and diaspora priorities.

State of the Union on Immigration - The State of Black Immigration

This forum will bring together Black immigrant-serving organizations to elevate community voices and engage Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Member staff directly on the impacts of federal immigration policies.

125 national, state, and local organizations have already joined together to call on CBC leadership to defend Black immigrant communities. This gathering provides a timely and strategic platform to further amplify that call ensuring congressional offices hear directly from the communities and organizations most affected.

The purpose of this briefing is to to bring Congressional Black Caucus Member staff and other policymakers into direct dialogue with community leaders and impacted families, ensuring that Black immigrant experiences are centered in federal immigration oversight and reform.

This briefing will convene immigrant-serving organizations, civil rights groups, impacted families, and community members to help shape immigration policy affecting Black immigrants.

Community Immigration Defense Fund – Information Session

About the Event (Virtual)

The Community Immigration Defense Fund is a national initiative launched by a coalition of Nigerian American organizations, including the Nigerian Center, the Nigerian American Lawyers Association (NALA), the Nigerian American Public Affairs Committee (NAPAC), and the NAPAC Foundation. The fund aims to eliminate financial barriers for individuals who need to consult with an immigration attorney but cannot afford legal representation.

We are holding a virtual meeting to discuss House Resolution 220, which proposes the re-designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) due to armed conflict and religious persecution of minority groups, sponsored by Rep. Christopher Smith. At this meeting, we will hear from organizations and community leaders championing this campaign. We will consider both supporting and opposing arguments to help our community understand the implications of this designation to the country. KAMA DC is a volunteer-run non-profit that provides a platform for immigrants and refugees living in the DMV area to share their stories and skills. Since 2016, KAMA aims to put on high quality storytelling events and classes led by immigrants and refugees, and also manages the D.C. Immigration Film Festival.

Voter Education Workshop for Non-Citizens and Immigrants in DC

About Event (In-person)

Join us for an informative Voter Education Workshop specifically designed for non-citizens and immigrants who are residents of Washington, DC. With the recent change in legislation, non-citizens are now eligible to vote in DC local elections. This workshop, hosted by the Nigerian Center in collaboration with the District of Columbia Board of Elections (DCBOE), will provide you with everything you need to know to exercise your new voting rights confidently.

During the workshop, you will:

  • Learn about the voter registration process and how to participate in local elections.

  • Understand the legal implications of voting as a non-citizen, including how it does not affect your prospects of becoming a permanent resident or U.S. citizen.

  • Receive guidance from representatives of the DC Election Board on what to expect on election day.

You are cordially invited to the 8th Annual One Voice Africa Reception will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, as part of the 53rd Annual Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference. The reception is hosted by the One Voice Africa Network. This year’s event will be held at The Continent DC located at 1110 Vermont Ave NW, Washington, DC 20005 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 PM followed by an Afrobeat party from 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM.

Are you an international student seeking off-campus employment authorization due to economic hardship?

This Know Your Rights workshop is an important event for international students seeking clarity on work authorization and the practical steps to take to gain authorization. There are ongoing Special Student Relief (SSR) campaigns to designate several African countries, including Nigeria, Congo, Sudan, Mauritania, and others with this status. SSR allows international students more opportunities for employment on and off campus. While these campaigns are ongoing, international students might be able to apply for immigration benefits that include off-campus work authorization individually. Topics will include, understanding F-1 visa work regulations, and navigating work authorization extensions and renewals.
