Washington, DC — The Nigerian Center, in partnership with a national coalition of Nigerian American organizations, convened a Congressional Briefing titled “Why Nigeria Matters: Security, Economy, and Diaspora Priorities for U.S. Policy” at the U.S. Capitol on March 26, 2026.

The nonpartisan briefing brought together Members of Congress, congressional staff, policy stakeholders, and leaders from the Nigerian American community to engage in a timely and forward-looking discussion on Nigeria’s strategic importance to the United States. Conversations focused on regional security cooperation, trade and economic engagement, democratic governance, and the growing influence of the Nigerian American diaspora.

A key outcome of the briefing was a unified call from the coalition for the reestablishment of a bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Nigeria, aimed at strengthening legislative engagement, deepening policy coordination, and elevating Nigeria’s importance within U.S. foreign policy priorities.

Speakers included leading voices from policy, healthcare, law, and diaspora advocacy:

  • Dr. Noel Ilogu, MD, MRCP, DFASAM, Nigerian Physicians Advocacy Group (NPAG)

  • Prince Maduka Nkuku, Nigerian American Public Affairs Committee (NAPAC)

  • Jonathan Dörnhofer, U.S.–Nigeria Council for Food Security, Trade & Investment

  • Emmanuel Ogebe, U.S.-Nigeria Law Group

  • Nkechi Ilechie, Nigerian Center

  • Gbenga Ogunjimi, Nigerian Center
