Washington, D.C. — On April 16, 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1689, extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. The Nigerian Center joins partners and communities across the country in celebrating this important victory for Haitian families and all those who believe in a just and humane immigration system.
“This moment reflects what is possible when communities organize, coalitions stand firm, and Congress listens. This victory not only brings relief to hundreds of thousands of Haitian families, but it also sets a new standard for immigration justice advocacy in the United States, and expand the realm of possibility for immigrant communities nationwide.”
Gbenga Ogunjimi, Executive Director of the Nigerian Center.
Haitian TPS holders are integral to the prosperity of the United States. They are America’s workers, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. This action affirms their dignity and their right to stability.
While this progress is significant, the work continues. The Nigerian Center stands in solidarity with the Haitian community and all TPS holders as efforts move forward in the Senate and beyond.
