Nigerian Center Launches Free Legal Services for Detained Immigrants
The Nigerian Center is expanding access to justice by launching its Detention Services Program, a nationwide initiative dedicated exclusively to supporting immigrants who are currently in immigration detention and facing removal proceedings. Available to eligible community members across the United States, the program provides comprehensive support to help detained individuals navigate the immigration system and access critical legal and community resources.
Services may include potential pro bono legal representation in bond and removal proceedings before the Immigration Court, legal consultations, referrals to trusted community resources, and humanitarian and community advocacy support. The program also assists families by providing information, connecting them with available resources, and helping them navigate the challenges associated with a loved one's detention.
The launch of the program comes at a critical time. Black immigrants face some of the highest rates of immigration detention and deportation in the United States and often encounter significant barriers to obtaining legal representation and immigration relief. Through this initiative, the Nigerian Center seeks to help ensure that detained immigrants are not forced to face complex immigration proceedings alone.
