Summer Igbo Language Teacher – Children’s Enrichment Program

The Nigerian Center is a vibrant immigrant and cultural organization rooted in the values of social justice, cultural inclusion, and community connection. We are committed to celebrating African heritage and supporting the preservation of language and culture for all, from families passing down native traditions to African Americans reconnecting with their roots, to language enthusiasts passionate about indigenous knowledge.

This summer, we are launching an Igbo Language Enrichment Program in Washington, DC — a joyful, Saturday-based initiative designed for children ages 4–10. The goal is to help young learners build spoken fluency and cultural confidence in Yoruba through play-based, immersive instruction. Using music, games, storytelling, and creative interaction, the program fosters cultural pride, language development, and a deep sense of belonging.

Role Overview:

We are hiring an enthusiastic Igbo Language Teacher to lead weekly enrichment sessions focused on speaking and listening. Lessons should be engaging, interactive, and developmentally appropriate for children ages 4–10. Each session will include songs, stories, games, and cultural activities in a warm and supportive classroom environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach basic Igbo language and expressions in a fun, engaging format.

  • Use games, songs, crafts, and stories to reinforce vocabulary and speech.

  • Prepare weekly lesson plans and manage classroom flow.

  • Collaborate with an assistant teacher and provide a warm, structured space.

Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Igbo (native or near-native speaker).

  • Experience teaching or working with young children preferred.

  • Strong communication and creativity.

  • Commitment to all 8 Saturday sessions.

Pay:

  • $18–$22 per hour
